Holiday cottages in
Norfolk
The county of Norfolk is one of the most sparsely
populated of all English counties with a size of 2,069 square miles and a
population of 740,000. The administration centre for Norfolk is in the quaint
city of Norwich. Kings Lynn and the resorts of Great Yarmouth, Cromer and
Hunstanton are other places of note. Physical attributes of the county include
the rivers Ouse, Yare, Bure and Waveney, and of course, the Norfolk Broads, a
series of waterways which are famous for their varied birdlife and natural
tranquility. Traditional reed thatching is still practised to maintain a link
with the past. Fen jumping is also a traditional pursuit which is kept up to
this very day.
Holiday cottages in
Suffolk
The eastern county of Suffolk covers an expanse
of some 1,500 square miles and has a population of just 640,000. The county
lists its main products as cereals, sugar beet, fertilizers, agricultural
machinery and the famous Suffolk Punch breed of working horse. The headquarters
of British horse racing is to be found at Newmarket in the west of the county.
Birdlife thrives along parts of the coast, especially at Minsmere Bird
Sanctuary where avocets and other wading birds seek refuge.
Holiday
cottages in Cambridgeshire.
The home of the famous Cambridge
University which for generations has turned out some of the finest academic
minds in the world, Cambridgeshire can boast the traditional beauty of
the city of Cambridge, known as cycle city due to the profusion of bicycles
preferred for travelling around there, and the more modern city of
Peterborough. The natural features of Cambridgeshire are the river Cam, famed
for the Cambridge student's obsession with punting and the Isle of Ely, which
can boast a fabulous 11th Century Cathedral and the hiding place of the famed
freedom fighter Hereward The Wake. It is part of the Fen country, a bowl of
dark alluvial soil that is rich and fertile.
Holiday cottages in
Essex.
Essex covers an area of some 1,417 square miles and in Harwich
provides a direct link to Holland and the continent of Europe. It features the
former royal hunting ground of Epping Forest, the marshy coastal headland of
the Naze and the site of London's third airport of Stansted.
Holiday
cottages in Hertfordshire.
Hertfordshire is
divided into two distinctive areas. In the east the new towns of Welwyn Garden
City, Letchworth Garden City and the town of Watford are highly industrialised
whilst in the West of the county, lie many smaller towns and villages which are
overwhelmingly agricultural in their nature. Hertfordshire is blessed with some
excellent examples of Britain's scenic beauty in the Chiltern Hills, which run
through part of the west of the county into Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.
Being comparatively close to London the county has some of the finest examples
of traditional English country homes within it's borders. Hatfield House,
Knebworth House and Brocket Hall all date back centuries whilst in the market
town of Berkhamsted a Norman castle still stands.
Holiday cottages in
Lincolnshire.
As the names of it's towns and villages
suggests Lincolnshire was one of the areas most heavily influenced by
the Danes and the Vikings on their many incursions into post-Roman Britain.
Famous people who originate from Lincolnshire include the former Prime
Minister, Margaret Thatcher (who came from Grantham) and the famous 17th
Century scientist and discoverer of gravity, Sir Isaac Newton. Modern day
Lincolnshire relies on cattle and sheep farming, horse breeding, cereal
production, oil production and, something they have in common with their close
neighbours the Dutch, flower bulb production for their living. The whole county
remains rural, even feudal, for if any county can claim the title, Lincolnshire
is Olde England.
Holiday cottages in
Northamptonshire.
Enjoy Northamptonshire, a
treasure trove of history both old and new. A county of 'Squires and Spires'
Northamptonshire boasts over 200 medieval churches, and many stately homes.
e.g. Althorp, Sulgrave Manor, Boughton House, Lamport Hall, and Rockingham
Castle. Discover Northamptonshire's beautiful countryside with rich lowland
landscapes. It will be a haven of new discovery for anglers, cyclists,
ramblers, bikers and horse riders alike. Walk along hundreds of miles of leafy
