Grange End Cottages, The Lake District, Cumbria
Holiday cottage offering self catering accommodation in Cumbria, England.
Grange End, Lake District, Cumbria

A charming 18th century, Georgian, 4 star cottage with roaring log fire, 4 poster bed, oak beams and every modern convenience you could desire. "This is one of the finest holiday cottages in The English Lake District", a "real home from home", "everything you could want and much more too". These are just a few of the many comments written by our guests, many of whom return to stay regularly. We have been awarded 4 stars by Enjoy England (previously Visit Britain). This is an award we have maintained for a number of years now and is awarded for not just for facilities and equipment, but for cleanliness, hygiene and décor too.

Situated in the beautiful Cartmel valley with its lush green fields and rolling hills, this charming grade 2 listed cottage is located in a secluded, peaceful position, up a cobbled lane in the heart of the small, unspoilt village of Cark-in-Cartmel, well away from roads yet only a minute's stroll to either of the 2 good village pubs, both serving good food. Both pubs allow dogs and have areas where children are welcomed too. The cottage is provided with books and folders containing over 100 walks and recommendations of my personal favourites too.

Cark-in-Cartmel village is pleasantly unaffected by the high influx of tourism that can crowd the more central parts of the Lake District. This historic Southern Lake District Valley offers a very wide range of local Cumbrian attractions, from award winning restaurants & pubs, to gentle strolls through the medieval village of Cartmel, a stunning coastal walk around "Humphrey Head", or pick up the ancient Cistercian way that passes through the village and head for the hills! Relaxation & tranquillity even at the busiest times of the year. Assured beauty, whatever the season.

Out & About

Morecambe Bay, with its vast areas of sand and marshes is a popular haunt for bird watchers, as is nearby Leighton Moss bird sanctuary. Golfers can enjoy a round at a choice of two nearby courses, and Cark railway station is a four minute walk away, offering many easy day trip destinations as it transports you along one of the most picturesque railways in England.

Just around the corner from the cottage is Holker Hall, Cumbria's premier stately home, the home of Lord & Lady Cavendish. Residents and visitors to the village are granted permission to walk around the extensive parklands stocked with herds of deer and rare breed cattle and sheep. 10 minutes drive North is the fantastic Haverthwaite to Lakeside Steam Railway which connects you to the awaiting Windermere Lake steamers and cruise ships which travel the full 10 miles of the lake, dropping you (for collection later of-course) at Waterhead or Bowness. The Aquarium of the Lakes, also at Lakeside, gives you a good idea what lurks in the water below!

Food lovers will love the gastronomic delights of the area. Local delicacies like Holker salt marsh lamb, a wealth of local cheeses that include award winning, creamy goats milk, ewes milk blue cheeses and full bodied, strong cheeses that are not often found outside the area. We have rare breed pork, wild boar and beef and wonderfully fresh, organic herbs and vegetables grown on the upper slopes of Cartmel valley. Local fish and shell include line caught sea, river and lake varieties, not forgetting the wonderful Morecombe Bay grey shrimps and the famous Cartmel sticky toffee pudding.
