Gloucestershire is the home the Cotswolds and
the source of the River Severn. The Cotswolds are considered one of the most
scenic areas in Great Britain. As with other English counties Gloucestershire
boasts some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the world. Berkeley
Castle, where Edward the Second was murdered, is just one of the county's many
attractions. Gloucestershire is the essence of England. Its lovely hills,
verdant valleys and deep grassed pastures have an air thatís unique. Its
views, such as Birdlip, are spectacular. This county shares with Oxfordshire
the splendour of a part of Britain renowned for its beauty - the Cotswold
Hills. The Cotswolds are actually chalk hills, the bare bones lightly soil
covered and furred with fine grass.

Hereford & Worcester
Hereford & Worcester is a
mainly agricultural county. Its natural features include the famous Malvern
Hills with it's highest peak being the Worcester Beacon which is 1,395 feet
above sea level. The main towns in the county, formed in 1974, are Worcester,
Hereford, Kidderminster, Evesham, Ross-on-Wye and Ledbury. The county was
formed by the merging of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. As with the majority
of England's southern counties the principal products emanating from the county
are agricultural in nature. Apples and pears are the main crops with the famous
'Scrumpy' cider being an ever popular by-product of them.

Bordering Wales the county of Shropshire
covers an area of 1,347 square miles and is bisected from North West to South
East by the river Severn. Shropshire has a population of 400,000 and enjoys
mainly an agricultural way of life. Shrewsbury is the administrative
headquarters for the county with Telford, Oswestry and Ludlow being other main
towns in the county. It was in 1779 that the first Iron bridge was built to
span the River Severn and Ironbridge Gorge is a main tourist attraction to the
county to this day.

Staffordshire is the
home of some of the finest pottery in the world, the area around Stoke-on-Trent
being known as 'The Potteries'. The county covers an area of just over 1,000
square miles with a population of just over 1,000,000. The county is largely
flat, comprising the Vale of Trent and it's tributaries. It has as its main
towns the city of Stoke and the town of Stafford (the administrative
headquarters).

Warwickshire covers an area of 764 square
miles and has a population of 500,000. The county's administration is centred
on the town of Warwick, famous for it's castle, with Leamington Spa, Nuneaton,
Rugby and Stratford-upon-Avon, home of Shakespeare, being the other major
centres. Warwickshire features such attractions as Warwick and Kenilworth
castles, the remains of the 'Forest of Arden', as portrayed by Shakespeare in
As You Like It, and the site of the English Civil War battlefield of Edgehill.
