Holiday Cottages in
Strathclyde - Argyll, The West Highlands, Loch Lomond, Stirlingshire, Ayrshire,
Isles of Arran, Bute & Mull, Central Scotland.
The largest region in Scotland,
Strathclyde covers an area of 5,367 square miles and has a population of
2,500,000 (half the population of Scotland). Natural features of the region
include the river Clyde, once home to a mighty shipbuilding industry, part of
Loch Lomond, and the islands of Arran, Bute and Mull. The region also
encompasses part of the West Highlands including scenic Argyll, Ayrshire and
Renfrewshire.
Argyll is famous for its gardens specialising in exotic
azaleas and rhododendrons. It offers forest walks, cycle trails, bird watching,
riding, fishing, and many places of historical and archaeological interest.
Inveraray - an ancient stronghold of the Campbell Clan - is noted for its
castle and historic jail. Nearby attractions include the Auchindrain Folk
Museum and the Argyll Wildlife Park. Within easy travelling distance from
Inveraray are the Crinan Canal and the prehistoric sites around Kilmartin. To
the south is the Kintyre peninsular and Campbeltown. To the north are Loch Awe,
the spectacular Pass of Brander, the tunnels of the Cruachan hydro-electric
scheme, and Oban with its shops, distillery and ferries to many of the islands.
Argyll is full of beautiful scenery, gardens, archaeology and the history to go
with it. Visitors can roam the hills and forests on foot or bicycle, go
sailing, fish in freshwater or sea lochs, or enjoy horse riding from one of
several stables in the area.
The region of Central in Scotland consists of the pre-1975
counties of Stirlingshire, South Perthshire and West Lothian. The region is
steeped in history and contains much beautiful countryside. Some principle
features are Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and the field of
Bannockburn. With an expanse of just over 1,000 square miles the region has a
population of 275,000. Its main commercial products come from agriculture,
brewing and distilling, engineering and electronics. The famed Rob Roy
MacGregor is a son of the region.
